Xing Wang Deng's Team Obtains U.S. Patent Authorization for the Core Technology of Third-Generation Hybrid Wheat Breeding
2021-12-02
The Xing Wang Deng team's core patent for the third-generation hybrid wheat breeding technology, "Fertility Restoration Gene in Wheat and Uses Thereof", has been authorized in the United States. Over a decade, Xing Wang Deng's team has been committed to the research and development of third-generation hybrid wheat breeding technology. This innovation covers the cloning of male sterility genes and their promoters, as well as their application in hybrid breeding.
Utilizing flow cytometry and high-throughput sequencing methods, the team has cloned a fertility restoration gene, FRG1, which can fully restore the male fertility of the Lanzhou nuclear male sterile mutant or its allelic mutant. This lays the foundation for constructing a new hybrid wheat breeding technology system. Furthermore, the discovery provides an array of possible solutions to existing bottlenecks in wheat hybrid breeding such as unstable fertility in sterile lines, limited resources for hybrid breeding, complex seed production techniques, and high seed production costs. The innovation has both significant meaning and practical value for improving wheat hybrid breeding.
