First Watermelon T2T Reference Genome and EMS Saturated Mutant Library
2022-06-28
On June 22, 2022, the teams led by Xingping Zhang and Hang He, from the Peking University Institute of Advanced Agricultural Sciences and Shandong Laboratory of Advanced Agricultural Sciences in Weifang, collaborated to publish a research paper in Molecular Plant titled "A telomere-to-telomere gap-free reference genome of watermelon and its mutation library provide important resources for gene discovery and breeding". This paper reports the high-quality telomere-to-telomere (T2T) gapless genome map of a small-sized watermelon inbred line, G42, and the construction of a G42 EMS saturated mutant library using pollen mutation techniques, providing valuable resources for the analysis of watermelon gene functions and breeding. Dr. Amnon Levi, a renowned cucurbit geneticist from the US Department of Agriculture Vegetable Laboratory, highly esteemed this work: "This is an amazing work and a major contribution to watermelon genomics. Having male sterility is a great accomplishment."
