PNAS | Integration and Expression of Fungal Virus Genes Convert a Plant Pathogenic Fungus into a Biocontrol Agent
2022-12-06
On December 5, 2022, the teams led by Xing Wang Deng and Li Guo from the Peking University Institute of Advanced Agricultural Sciences and Shandong Laboratory of Advanced Agricultural Sciences in Weifang, in collaboration with Professor Qian Zhou of the College of Plant Protection at Hunan Agricultural University, published a research paper in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America (PNAS) titled "Mycoviral gene integration converts a plant pathogenic fungus into a biocontrol agent". The paper reports the identification of a low-toxicity fungal virus, SlAV1, found in the tomato target-spot pathogen, which targets and interrupts the biosynthesis of the host fungal toxin Altersolanol A, causing the pathogen to lose its virulence. Moreover, the pathogen with integrated SlAV1 gene sequences transformed from a pathogenic fungus into a biocontrol agent, protecting plants from infection by pathogenic fungi. This research provides a green and efficient strategy for the control of fungal diseases in crops, possessing significant application value.
