Seven watermelon varieties from the Peking University Institute of Advanced Agricultural Sciences won awards at the 2nd China (Hainan) International Melon Industry Development Conference and "Hainan Melon" Brand Promotion Event

From January 25th to 28th, the 2nd China (Hainan) International Melon Development Conference, accompanied by the "Hainan Melon" brand promotion event, was held in Yazhou Bay Science and Technology City, Sanya. Over the course of three days, several experts in the melon field from both domestic and overseas, representatives of industrial enterprises and academics, delivered presentation targeted pain points and difficulties in industrial chain development, had interactive discussions on research directions, cultivation techniques, sales strategies, quality control traceability, brand establishment, and industrial demands.
Deputy Director Zhang Xingping presented a report on "Seedless Watermelon Breeding and Production."
This conference had a 2.7ht plastichouse plot for new variety (both domestic and foreign) display in Yazhou District, Sanya. There were total 885 varieties and 1399 germplasm accessions. Before the opening ceremony, the conference invited ten experts to judge the varieties grown in the display plots according to the agreed metrics.
The Peking University Institute of Advanced Agricultural Sciences participated the display and elite watermelon variety selection, among 10 entries seven were awarded, including three first place prize entries out of four watermelon categories. The first place awards were for the mini watermelon variety W105, the triploid seedless watermelon 308, and the medium-large seeded watermelon variety WW101. Deputy Mayor Changfeng Zhang of Sanya and Vice President Bing Cao of Hainan University presented the awards. The conference also showcased, displayed, and promoted the award-winning varieties through the media.
In 2022, the Peking University Institute of Advanced Agricultural Sciences established a 23ht winter breeding nursery in Yazhou Bay, Sanya, Hainan. Annually, nearly 30 individuals are stationed there to carry out planting and variety selection.
